Rob's Travel Log

We shall not cease from exploration.

And the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first time.

-T.S. Eliot

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa

Travel and exploration have always been among my favorite pastimes.  To date, I have visited 48 of the 50 United States and 61 foreign countries and territories.  I have lived in 7 of these countries for more than six months, and have picked up bits and pieces of several languages, including Swedish, German, Spanish, and Jamaican Patois (believe me, this is practically a foreign language!).

Being insatiably curious about the world in which we live, travel for me is much more than moving from point A to point B.  Rather, it is a process of continuously educating oneself by experiencing new sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and perspectives.  It encompasses not only the history and culture of a place and its people, but also the natural beauty.  Ultimately, travel is as much about introspection as it is about the external experience.  Travel enlarges one's perspective, expands one's knowledge, and instills tolerance and understanding.  And perhaps most importantly, travel teaches us to truly appreciate the familiar places we call home.
